Upstairs, garage and tight doorways
A full-size refrigerator is tall and top-heavy, and the hard part of moving one is usually inside the house, like a tight turn at the bottom of the stairs or a doorway that's an inch too narrow. That's why we send a two-man crew. If the fridge won't clear a doorway with the doors on, the crew takes the doors off.
A fridge that has to come down from upstairs gets one separate flat total. It's never a stair fee stacked on top.

Why an old fridge can't just go to the curb in Houston
In the City of Houston, heavy trash only takes refrigerators and freezers that carry a certified technician's tag showing the refrigerant has been removed. So before a fridge can go out with the heavy trash, a technician has to deal with the refrigerant and tag it. The rule is on the city's heavy trash page.
Outside Houston city limits, it depends on who picks up your trash. A lot of homes in Katy, Cinco Ranch and Cypress get service through a MUD or an HOA hauler, and each one sets its own rules for appliances. Check with yours before you set anything out.
